Type 1 Diabetes Engineered Stem Cells Show Promise in Mouse Model

A new MUSC study found that engineered mesenchymal stem/stromal cells reversed newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes in mice by protecting insulin-producing beta cells and reshaping the autoimmune response. While still experimental and unproven in humans, the approach could one day move diabetes care beyond insulin replacement toward durable immune restoration.
