CAR-T Therapy for Lupus: Could Immune Cells Be “Reset” Rather Than Suppressed?

CAR-T cell therapy is an experimental lupus treatment that engineers a patient’s own immune cells to seek out and eliminate disease-driving B cells, potentially allowing the immune system to rebuild with less autoimmune activity. Early studies in severe, treatment-resistant lupus—including lupus nephritis—have reported deep reductions in disease activity and occasional medication-free remissions, but larger long-term trials are still needed to confirm safety, durability, and who is most likely to benefit.
