The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC) has announced promising results in Type 1 diabetes treatment using umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell (UC-MSC) therapy. The procedure was successfully performed on a 20-year-old Emirati patient, marking a significant advancement in regenerative medicine for diabetes management.

Type 1 diabetes leads to lifelong insulin dependence. UC-MSCs have gained attention for their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties, making them a potential therapeutic option for restoring pancreatic function and mitigating diabetes-related complications.

The ADSCC treatment involved isolating and expanding UC-MSCs in its advanced laboratories before administering them through a two-hour intravenous infusion. The patient was closely monitored throughout the process, with post-treatment assessments showing notable improvements in key diabetes markers, including blood sugar regulation and antibody reduction. Importantly, no adverse effects were reported, reinforcing the therapy’s safety profile.

Dr. Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer at ADSCC, emphasized the significance of this achievement:

“Our innovative treatment using mesenchymal stem cells demonstrates promising potential for improving diabetes management and reducing insulin dependency. This milestone underscores our commitment to advancing regenerative medicine and exploring the full therapeutic potential of UC-MSCs.”

Dr. Antonio Bencomo, General Manager at ADSCC Research Center, highlighted the center’s capabilities:

“Our laboratory is fully equipped with the technology and expertise to produce high-quality UC-MSCs under stringent protocols. These stem cells are now being applied in various therapeutic areas, with ongoing research expanding their potential use.”

This success opens the way for further applications of stem cell therapy in diabetes care, including potential trials for Type 2 diabetes. ADSCC remains at the forefront of regenerative medicine, contributing to Abu Dhabi’s vision as a global leader in medical innovation.
