For Long COVID Sufferers – This May End Lingering Symptoms

Millions worldwide are still struggling with the debilitating effects of long COVID, a condition that can cause brain fog, fatigue, and breathing problems for weeks or even months after infection. But a recent scientific breakthrough could finally offer relief.

Australian researchers at WEHI have discovered a new drug compound that, in pre-clinical studies, successfully prevented the most severe symptoms of long COVID in mice. This is the first time any therapy has shown such promising results in stopping the onset of long COVID symptoms before they start—potentially paving the way for a future treatment for humans.

WEHI Laboratory Head, Dr Marcel Doerflinger, believes this may be a turning point in the hunt for treatments to support people at risk of developing this condition.

Long COVID has been called a “silent pandemic,” affecting about 5% of everyone who contracts COVID-19 and leaving millions with more questions than answers. Until now, there has been no approved treatment and the underlying causes remain poorly understood. This new discovery could be a turning point, but more research and clinical trials in humans are needed before a drug becomes available.
